Who are you Becoming?

Ever seen those folks who became successful and seemed to abandon everything or most things they held dear before they became successful?

You might even know one or two of these people. They seemed dedicated to a value or belief or were just well-behaved people, till success came around and you couldn’t recognize them anymore.

It might even be you.

Are you attaining success at the expense of your authenticity?

Could the reason you are agitated and seemingly unsatisfied despite your success, be linked to some misalignment with your core?

If you achieve your dreams at the expense of the things you hold dear, even when you are not fully aware of them, you will never be truly satisfied.

True success happens when what you do and what you achieve aligns with who you are – your values and beliefs.

Even better, great success happens when you grow in becoming your best self even as you grow in achieving your goals.

Today we will take a look at a goal that is most often overlooked in our desire to live our dream life.

I’m talking about the goal of becoming – the goal that factors in who you are and who you would like to become.

I like to call it my ‘becoming’ goal

So what is this goal all about?

Your ‘becoming’ goal is focused on who you want to become.

With this goal, you lean into your values and core beliefs to ensure that you live in alignment with them.

Oftentimes, your ‘becoming’ goals will reflect in your habits, the things you do from day to day, the choices you make, and how you choose to live your life every day.

An example is the case of a father who values family and realizes that his kids will not be young forever and decides to rearrange his busy work schedule so he can spend more time with his children and be that Father who gives his children the most precious gift of all – the gift of his presence.

Or that woman who knows that her faith is central to her belief and does her business in a way that aligns with her deepest belief about God. And when I think of someone like this, I think of Mrs. Ibukun Awosika. She is a sterling example of values, business, and success mixed together; and a huge inspiration that it is possible for us too.

The importance of setting ‘becoming’ goals goes beyond living authentically to include the fact that the person who receives the dream is not usually the person who will achieve those dreams.

A lot of times, your dreams will require a higher version of you.

For example, if you have a dream to be a top businesswoman but you currently have a lazy habit of avoiding tough work, you will need to change that. You will need to become a person who loves diligent work and takes pride in it. And no, I’m not talking about slave work but work, as God intended.

So what do you want to achieve? And what version of you does that dream require?

Most importantly, who do you want to become?

To set your becoming goals, you need to ask yourself questions like

  • Who am I now/Who do I believe I am now?
  • Who do I want to become?
  • What are the things that matter to me – values and beliefs?
  • How do I want to live my life?
  • What do I believe to be true and how is that truth reflected in my life?
  • Where am I now in relation to the person I want to become?
  • What steps can I take to bridge the gap between my current self and my desired self?
  • What qualities, skills, and mindset shifts are necessary to become this person?

Remember, creating goals for who you want to become not only helps you stay authentic and grounded, it gives you the foundation to achieve your wildly important goals. And that is the definition of a higher life!

Did any of these resonate with you? type in the comments and let me know which one it is
